We are going to make this 2003 VW Golf, electric.

A friendly voice in CA suggested a blog would provide good easy documentation and a way to get feedback before we make a bad choice.  Please speak up before we do something dangerous.

Just because we can.

We need a car that can travel 30 miles a day to and from classes, yes this car gets good mileage already, but  I am a mechanical engineer and have two kids that are starting college and the current daily driver vehicle is referred to as the beater for good reason.  We will hopefully sell the engine from this car and the beater to offset about 1/3 the cost of the conversion.

UPDATE:
This project was initially pitched to a number of local philanthropists with success.  Thanks to those groups for stepping forward.  The politics became complicated as more offered to help.  At my choice to get the project moving we have chosen to accept one sponsor and work the project with students privately.  We want to do the work with the students, not politicize the project.

UPDATE:
If you have good advice, please says so as this is our first time down this path.  If you have good advice that would lead me to a business you have a personal stake in, please be up front.

  1. Looks like a fun project. I hope it goes well. If I can help with advice I will try in the midst of my full schedule. Have fun.

  2. Looks like a cool project. We are thinking about doing something similar here in CU. It would be cool to meet up and brainstorm. -Andy
